Back to School Celebration for Parents, Challenges for Teens: Acne

The Challenge:

We all recall the teenage years when going back to school was both exciting and terrifying.  One of the greatest challenges critical to the teenager is personal appearance and Acne.  Some are blessed to have minimal outbreaks, but most suffer through oily skin and embarrassing outbreaks. Unfortunately, significant numbers have quite severe and scarring skin eruptions.  The options are often limited to over-the-counter cleansing solutions that may or may not work along with daily prescription medications.

These acne medications are often expensive (several hundred dollars per month) and may adversely affect the liver, stomach (nausea, vomiting, pain), skin (dryness, chapped lips, sun sensitivity, thinning hair), and mental health (Depression, suicidal, emotional outbursts).

What is Acne?

Acne develops when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells resulting in redness, swelling and local inflammation.  During The adolescent years, oil glands are stimulated by hormones that peak during puberty.  It also has genetic connections meaning if your parents had severe acne, you are at risk for the same.

Blocked pores form whiteheads and blackheads (comedones). Whiteheads are closed comedones. The follicles are filled with bacteria and have a very small opening at the top of your skin. Because they are mostly closed, there is no change in melanin and the whitish color remains. Blackheads consist of follicles beneath your skin with very large openings or pores (open comedones) clogged with sebum.  The melatonin pigment that exists naturally in your skin is broken down and oxidized causing the blackened color often found on the back, shoulders, and face.

Potential Treatment Options:

Our acne program focuses a great deal on education, preventative care, and aggressive skin cleansing. We work with teens and adults teaching them correct skin care processes for their specific challenges and attempt to provide non-prescription-based solutions including the use of HydraFacial, Elypsa Blue light, therapy, and a Home Treatment Kit.

Our first step

HydraFacial is a non-invasive treatment that uses a four-step process to cleanse, exfoliate, hydrate, and provide nutrients. We focus on mild to moderate outbreaks by opening pores and removing impurities.   We then instill serums/nutrients into the opened pores/epidermis.

The system uses a proprietary wand to exfoliate the skin, then fluid gently dislodges debris and opens pores. While it cleanses, the HydraFacial wand uses gentle suction to extract the dirt, oil, and dead skin cells. Once the surface is cleansed, the wand infuses a nutrient-rich serum into the skin to rehydrate and rejuvenate the area restoring your youthful glow.

For more severe cases, we will start with our Blue-light and a home Noon Aesthetics acne kit and then have your return in a few weeks for a HydraFacial.

We will often repeat a second or third treatment over about 6 weeks to continue the improvement.  This is especially beneficial when special events are upcoming (Prom, Homecoming, Weddings, etc.)

Our Second Step: Blue Light Therapy Using the Elipsa LightStim

HydraFacial’s Blue Light Therapy is a non-invasive acne treatment in which light is used to eliminate microorganisms on the skin. It is extremely beneficial for people who suffer from oily skin or breakouts. Blue light appears to be harmless with minor side effects including itching and sun sensitivity.

The HydraFacial™ LED Red Light Therapy mode also provides benefits improving the appearance of skin firmness and resilience. It helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and other signs of aging.

The Home Treatment:
